Snoring Therapy: Relief from Snoring

Snoring occurs from vibrations in the soft palate and tongue, which can happen when air cannot move freely through the mouth. It is a sleep disorder that impacts breathing and sleep quality. It is also associated with sleep apnea, which is when breathing is interrupted during sleep.

If you are having issues with snoring, your dentist may recommend several treatments, a few of which has been listed below.

Mandibular Advancement Devices (MAD)

Mandibular advancement devices (MADs) are a type of mouth guard that works by repositioning the lower jaw so that breathing is unobstructed, reducing snoring. Many people find that their snoring is worse when lying on their backs, so a dental sleep device can help realign the jaw so the tongue doesn’t fall back into the throat and cause the vibration.

MAD is generally made of hard acrylic and fits comfortably into a person’s mouth. It works by advancing the lower jaw, which tightens the soft tissue and muscles of the upper airway. This reduces the amount of air that vibrates in the back of the throat and causes the snoring sound.

CPAP

CPAP stands for continuous positive airway pressure. CPAP therapy involves wearing a mask connected to a CPAP machine that delivers air pressure through a small hose and into your airway. This air pressure helps keep your airway open so it doesn’t collapse when you breathe. This can greatly reduce or even eliminate snoring.

Positional Therapy Devices

Positional therapy devices are worn in the mouth during sleep and work by slightly repositioning the lower jaw forward. This reduction in jaw movement can help to prevent the tongue from blocking the air passage or sliding back down the throat. This is considered the least invasive type of snoring device.

While they make sleeping more comfortable, repositioning devices are not worn throughout the night. They are typically worn only during sleep or while napping.

Surgery

Surgery involves removing or loosening the tissue at the back of the mouth and the throat. Before surgery, a sleep test is done. This helps the dentist and physician determine the best course of action.

Sometimes, the tonsils are removed. In other cases, the uvula or soft palate are trimmed. If your snoring is mild, you may want to try a less invasive treatment first
